What’s Next! – December 1990, Part 1

All the games!

It’s Christmas time and parents don’t know what to get for their children. Will the overly aggressive teenage Suzie find Cutie Suzuki no Ringside Angel in her stocking? Will Billy’s parents see M.U.S.H.A. and say “Perhaps this game will turn our twenty-year-old slacker into a man?” Who can say. 1990 was a long time ago.

Between the Master System, Mega Drive, and Game Gear, December 1990 has 30 game releases. That isn’t a lot compared to the months to come, but it’s certainly no small amount. 1991 is just around the corner, and yet so far away.

15 games will be shown here, 15 in the next post. All release dates are for Japan unless otherwise specified. Please look forward to them! I know I am, I think.

Looks a good month sir. I’m sure you played Psycho Fox for the Master System already – Magical Hat is a recycled version of that, as is Decapattack so you might want to dig out your notes for Psycho Fox!

Some absolutely fantastic games in this batch! I haven’t pulled out Shadow Dancer for a long time, I will have to do that and post my thoughts. Atomic Robo-Kid I only recently acquired, though the frustration factor kept me from going back to it. Elemental Master: so good. Unfortunately, I don’t have a couple of the fantastic shmups here: Sagaia and MUSHA have both eluded me. That said, I might emulate anyway. I haven’t played Crack Down, but have always been curious about it. And I’ve never even heard of the generically titled Star Cruiser, but Masaya was usually good for solid titles, so I’m guessing it’s a shmup? Dangerous Seed is solid but unmemorable, but worth playing if you can find it. Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken is the Japanese equivalent to one of my favorite action-platform games from childhood, known here in the US as Decap Attack. What a great game, tons of fun, great soundtrack, fun, colorful graphics, etc. I might have to track down the Japanese original so I can finally compare!

That Crackdown cover! Some great games in that lot. I’m looking forward to hearing about Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure – I’ve always wanted to try it given my devotion to Psycho Fox. I didn’t really get on with Decap Attack so I hope MFHTA isn’t just a straight re-skin.

Interesting bunch of games, some good, some I’ve never heard of and one guilty pleasure (no not the one with the Japanese chicks).
Also I will finally try out M.U.S.H.A I’ve heard many good things.
Looking forward to the reviews as always.

I’m not sure about Dangerous Seed and Star Cruiser. But the rest are solid titles. Well I don’t know about the Mahjong game eigther. Was a good time to have a Genesis. Still pre SNES. The only one I absolutely did not like was Hard Drivin. I mean I didn’t like the arcade. So I can’t really judge the Genesis port. It seemed technically impressive. But played like crap. But so did the arcade IMO. I suppose it was an OK rental. Maybe it was a bridge too far. Today’s FPS police would impound that game.

I have soft spot for Crackdown. I always enjoyed that game. I feel the Genesis port was good despite it not being as good as the arcade. Plus it has a crazy last level blowing up a Satan/Goat thing.

Dangerous Seed, Crack Down, and (more controversially) Atomic Robo-kid are all fun titles IMHO. Star Cruiser is an oddball 3D title that recently got a fan-translation. Haven’t really played M.U.S.H.A. or Shadow Dancer; hard not to believe the first of those two, at least, is overhyped.
